Morning all,

I mentioned in the last newsletter this quote from Buffet:

“Risk is not knowing what you are doing.”

Honestly, it’s been ringing in my ears ever since.

Fixing the #$%^ ups

I think back to some of the most interesting but stressful work I did as an analyst and consultant when I was brought in to fix stuff. Analysts are human. Occasionally, they get stuff wrong, and the ramifications are wide-ranging. Reputations can be tarnished.

These #$%^ ups often originate from basic mistakes. More often than not, this is due to getting the accounting wrong. In my opinion, knowledge of the numbers isn’t good enough. Most analysts need to be better with numbers. I think I also understand why we have this issue.

Accounting isn’t interesting to many analysts. When analysts are taught accounting, they gloss over it, itching to get onto valuation and modeling. It’s not helped because accounting is poorly taught to analysts. Analysts must understand flow, transaction impact, balance sheet balances, and why this is important. Debits and credits are useful to book-keepers (and 16th-century monks! - those who know, know, know what I mean) - less so for analysts.

But on the upside, analysts don’t need (for the most part) to be technical accountants and be able to roll off the hedging effectiveness testing rules contained in IFRS 9 (you will never make friends being able to be this!). However, they need to be brilliant at the basics, have a framework to derive the impact of transactions on the numbers, understand why the financial statement continues to work and integrate.

New Content: The LBO Engine: Building the Sources and Uses of Funds

The Sources and Uses of Funds in an LBO model are the engines of the whole model. It’s part of the model you’ll spend the most time playing around with to ensure you’ve got a sustainable capital structure that aligns with the company’s operating model and cash generation profile. Therefore, knowing how to build well is a key part of the model.

This 11-video playlist will explain the full sources and uses of funds statement build. We will also show you how to build ITM equity award buyouts and model the debt fees without creating the dreaded circularities.

The video below is from the LBO Engine series. Check it out to get a flavor of what we are doing and how we do it.

This video series is included as part of our Premium Plus subscription tier. If you’ve not got access, get access by taking the 14-day free all-access, all-you-can-eat trial!

New Content: When to Sell?

It seems like so much is written and told about when to buy and so little about when to sell. IMHO, the sell decision is the tricky one to nail, especially as humans, we tend to be wracked with biases and insecurities.

In this video series, I examine the psychology of the sell decision and how we often sell the winners too early and the losers too late. We also examine the anatomy of a sell recommendation from the sell-side perspective—a rare recommendation at the best of times. We talk about the need to balance concentration against the power of diversification and how liquidity plays an important role in molding these decisions into an optimized portfolio strategy.

Highlights from the back catalog

New Tech: Animated and Dynamic Closed Captioning

We moved to a new Tech partner for video editing about a month ago. One thing I appreciate now is the ability to experiment and switch with ease. Big institutions struggle to do this.

Closed captioning is vital for many reasons - I’ll give you a few:

  • accessibility and inclusion,

  • improved comprehension,

  • increased engagement,

  • listening in noisy environments,

  • flexibility in sound-sensitive environments

  • oh…and meeting legal requirements in an increasing number of countries

We’ve embraced closed captioning from the start.

But let’s face it: these captions are usually boring. They often read like Ceefax subtitles (you’ll have to be a bit older to appreciate what I am saying here).

With our new partner, we’ve got almost flawless AI transcription (we still review every video, though!) coupled with animation options to increase engagement. Take a look below…

Now over 4,000….
Assess, learn & conquer

I’m starting to wonder when I can say we have the largest investment self-assessment platform on the planet. I’m getting more confident in saying we have the best platform. 4,000 questions - that’s one hell of an investment in time. By the way, we ain’t finished - this number will grow!

But it’s not the writing of the questions that’s key here. It’s the answer. No one learns anything knowing that the correct answer is B! We all need thorough explanations for the answers. So we have built questions without having to fall back on regurgitating CFA questions (Argh!) - we’ve built our questions by thinking hard about what you need to know and understand on the desk. And unlike most training organizations, we can do this because we’ve run these desks!!

What do Assess, Learn, and Conquer do?

  • Every assessment is unique and built for you.

  • Each question gets instantly marked, together with Immediate feedback from me.

  • Complete answer analysis and review are provided at the end of the assessment.

  • You’re on the clock.

  • Take the test again and again. Each time, we will generate a unique self-assessment for you.

How do you find these self-assessments?

    • Firstly, you’ll need a Premium Plus subscription to get full access (we provide a free sampler across all of our subscription tiers):

    • They are in your “Learning Hub

    • Follow the “Assess, Learn, and Conquer” link on the App landing screen

    • Search “Assess” using any of the search fields

Learn something new now. Excel’s new Checkboxes!

I don’t know if you’ve seen the new Checkbox function in Excel. It's so much easier and more adaptable than what we had before. It's excellent for adding multiple scenarios to your models and turning that model from a static calculator to something more like a model! Watch the video below—you’ll find it a handy skill in your Excel arsenal!

I’m currently putting together a library of what will probably end up being 300+ Excel Shorts videos. I’ll drip-feed these videos onto our social media platforms and host them on the InsightOne App (as part of the free access).
