Unlocking the Upside #1
Insights, ideas, rants from TheInvestmentAnalyst.com

Hey there!
It's been 7 months since we started at TheInvestmentAnalyst.com. We've traveled worldwide, clocking up 40,000 miles to deliver instructor-led training programs for a select group of clients, launched our App (InsightOne) on Google Play and the App Store, and authored over 1,700 digital assets.
I am pleased to have two amazing people join our platform as mentors. Juan Luis Perez (previously Global Head of Research and Analytics at UBS and Morgan Stanley) and Barry Hurewitz (who built UBS’s Evidence Lab Innovation business). JLP and Barry profoundly impacted our thinking, and their DNA has had a material impact on how theInvestmentAnalyst.com has and is evolving. If you want to know more, JLP’s and Barry’s full bios are in the App and the website's landing page.
My aim with this email is simple - to tell you what we are doing, how we are thinking, and how we can help enhance your insights. I’m aiming to do this every two weeks. It'll only take 5 minutes to read.
Your support means a lot to us; thank you for participating in our journey!

What's in Unlocking the Upside this week?
Always go to bed smarter than when you woke up…
It’s been a busy few weeks. We’ve put live over 100 new digital assets across four new programs and upgraded the content on over 15 existing programs. As you’ll see, I’ve been moved by Nvidia’s bullish moves as I’ve created this content. I’m still torn about valuing these companies — you’ll hear my views in the videos. I still have John Templeton’s words ringing in my ears, and what he says are the four most dangerous words in Finance, “This time it’s different!”. Our total digital asset count is now (as of this minute) 1,742.
Can companies keep increasing returns?
What makes the Magnificient Seven magnificent?
Defending the deal: M&A bid strategies explained.
Let’s get topical Q1 2024: Fundamental issues we see in the markets
You can search for these programs by hitting the search bar or looking at the “new content” slider in the App (on the landing page).

I constantly see people rise in life who are not the smartest, sometimes not even the most diligent, but they are learning machines.
What might you have missed?
Now that we’ve built a pretty extensive portfolio of digital assets, we can explore the vault and highlight a few programs you might have missed.
Build Models like a #1 ranked analyst: I'm excited to share this awesome eBook with you! It's about building financial models, and I'm drawing on my three decades of experience in this field. We've also included fantastic videos to guide you through the process. This is the financial model book I'm most thrilled about.
Minds and markets: The Intersection of Philosophy and Investment Analysis: This is a fascinating playlist of 7 videos examining how some ancient philosophers' thought leadership can help us shape our investment decisions.
Decoding Munger: I never met the guy, but I miss him. I’ve unpacked some of Charlie Munger’s quips and aphorisms to dive into the meaning and detail of what he means.
How we think about best practice financial modeling is an important piece. Excel is powerful and with great power….OK, I’ll stop. However, Excel is powerful, and its risks must be managed. This is how we manage our modeling risk.

Did you see it? Uber’s $7 billion buyback
Uber's massive $7 billion buyback is raising eyebrows. Sure, the move comes after their first profitable year, but is it the wisest use of their newfound cash? The CEO and the Financial Times have been discussing this very question. Some argue Uber should aggressively invest in growth, like expanding markets or pushing into new tech. Others see the buyback as necessary to appease Wall Street and boost a stock price that's been bumpy. What's your take? Is Uber being strategic or playing to investors?

Clients do say the nicest things…
Guess what?! A few weeks ago, I had the most incredible meeting with the Head of Equity at one of the biggest US funds! We chatted about all sorts of things, and then, out of nowhere, he dropped this bombshell of feedback on me about theInvestmentAnalyst.com. Let me tell you, it was mind-blowing! As you all know, starting a new business is no walk in the park. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, with constant self-doubt and moments of uncertainty. But then, when you least expect it, someone comes along and delivers this awe-inspiring message... and suddenly, all the doubts and worries fade into oblivion! Can you believe it?!

We're everywhere on social media, rocking it on six awesome platforms: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon, and X. Now, we've got some seriously amazing stuff exclusively on our App, but don't worry, our social media content is still pretty darn cool and incredibly helpful. Go ahead and give it a look!
Here’s an example of the short-form content we post on Social media. Support us and subscribe, and I promise I’ll never post videos of me dancing to Excel!
